Just a week after it secured FDA approval, Eli Lilly’s Zepbound now faces a challenge from Novo Nordisk’s investigational next-generation weight-loss candidate CagriSema in a Phase III trial.

Europe’s medicines regulator said on Friday its human medicines committee had recommended Eli Lilly’s diabetes drug Mounjaro also be approved as a weight-loss treatment.

Lilly shares have rallied over 60% this year to make it the world’s most valuable healthcare company by market cap as investors bet on Mounjaro’s success.

The move to hire CordenPharma comes as the U.S. drugmaker prepares to launch the type 2 diabetes medicine for weight loss in the United States amid exploding demand for obesity drugs.

Patients in a late-stage trial treated with Eli Lilly’s GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist saw a 21.1% mean body weight reduction over 72 weeks following an intensive lifestyle intervention program.

Eli Lilly and Co. on Wednesday appointed a new chief for its diabetes and obesity unit in a string of leadership changes ahead of a key regulatory decision on the use of its potential blockbuster drug Mounjaro as a weight-loss treatment.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) said in draft final guidance that it estimates some 180,000 people could benefit from the new treatment.

Novo Nordisk has again bought a weight-loss focused biotech, as the obesity market heats up. Announced Wednesday, the Danish pharma plans to buy Embark Biotech for $16.3 million up front with close to $500 million on the line in milestone payments—Novo’s second obesity-focused acquisition in three weeks.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in its draft guidance said it asked the company for more data on whether the drug Mounjaro, also known as tirzepatide, resulted in better weight loss than other drugs belonging to the same class of treatments.

A large trial showed that a high dose of Eli Lilly and Co.’s Mounjaro helped people with type 2 diabetes who were also obese or overweight to lose nearly 16% of their body weight, or over 34 pounds (15kg) on average, the company said on Thursday.
