Rapt Therapeutics said on Tuesday the U.S. FDA had placed on hold two mid-stage trials of the company’s drug to treat eczema and asthma, after liver failure was observed in one of the patients.

The positive data sets the stage for the drug, resmetirom, to become the first approved treatment for NASH, or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, a disease that affects about 5% of adults in the United States.

The two fatal cases of acute liver failure took place in Russia and Kazakhstan after 5 to 6 weeks of Zolgensma infusion and about 1-10 days following the initiation of corticosteroid taper, according to the company.
