Ypsomed said it would expand its manufacturing capacities over the coming years, with Novo Nordisk contributing a significant part of the investment for the additional production infrastructure.

Announcing the deal on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Novo said the contract will lead to the production of 16 million vials of insulin next year, marking its “expanded commitment” to improving access to life-saving insulin to people living with diabetes in Africa.

Novo Nordisk has hired U.S. private contract manufacturer PCI Pharma Services to handle assembly and packaging of Wegovy, a source familiar with the matter said, as it races to boost output of the weight-loss drug to meet demand.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) said in draft final guidance that it estimates some 180,000 people could benefit from the new treatment.

Novo Nordisk notched another win Friday as its mega blockbuster Wegovy (semaglutide) proved to also help patients with a common type of heart failure. The Danish pharma company announced results from a Phase III trial, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, adding to the drug’s growing list of benefits.

The Wegovy drugmaker said it expects the acquisition to be completed in 2023 provided that unspecified development and commercial milestones are met.

The company is leaning on Mounjaro, approved last May in the U.S. for diabetes, to soften the hit from insulin price cuts and competition for cancer therapy Alimta.

Novo Nordisk said on Tuesday a large late-stage study showed its obesity drug Wegovy had a clear medical benefit, in addition to weight loss, boosting the Danish drugmaker’s hopes of moving beyond Wegovy’s image as a lifestyle drug.

The decision comes after the company failed to improve vision in two late-stage studies testing its drug against diabetic macular edema.

Americans without health insurance pay an average of $98 for Eli Lilly’s generic insulin despite the company’s May 1 pledge to cut its list price to $25 per vial, according to a survey of more than 300 U.S. pharmacies by U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren’s office released on Thursday.
