The U.S. government will stop distributing free doses of Merck & Co.’s COVID-19 antiviral treatment molnupiravir by the middle of next month and expects it to be sold on the commercial market instead.

Merck & Co. Inc. said on Tuesday its COVID-19 pill was not effective at cutting the risk of coronavirus infections in people living with someone infected with the virus.

Roche has entered into a U.S. focused collaboration with Pfizer to drive awareness and educate on the importance of timely COVID-19 testing, available treatment options, symptoms, and the high-risk factors that can increase the chance of progressing to severe illness.

The U.S. government agreed to pay Pfizer Inc. nearly $2 billion for an additional 3.7 million courses of its COVID-19 antiviral treatment Paxlovid, the company said on Tuesday.
