In October 2023, the agency departed from its identity as Fishawack Health and unified its 1,500-plus experts under a single vision, structure, and global brand — Avalere Health. Boldly operating as one, and retiring a dozen heritage brands in the process, this rebrand announced the agency’s connected commercialization partner proposition and cemented its ability to innovate at speed.

According to the leadership team, 2023 was a notable year at Avalere Health because it was the year that the agency was born. Executives say the diverse healthcare expertise acquired since 2001 by Fishawack Health came together under one name and brand to imagine the possibilities for a healthier world and rapidly create the connections to make them happen.

Mario Muredda joined in January 2023 as president to complete the integration of the collected marketing expertise into an agency that network leaders believe can lead the development of the next chapter in healthcare marketing.  “We are living and working in an era in which extraordinary therapeutic breakthroughs are blowing our minds and simultaneously disease epidemics, health inequalities, and social injustice are breaking our hearts,” Muredda says. “We are building an agency for this peculiar, dynamic, and inspiring era, an agency with the unconventional creativity to help forge and maintain those critical connections that lead to better health.”

Recent accomplishments

While the Avalere Health name and brand may be new, many of the client relationships that the agency enjoys are years long and thriving, according to agency leaders. The group continues to support argenx in disease educational efforts such as “Untold Stories Autoimmune Condition Podcast” and in launching Vyvgart’s new subcutaneous route of administration with an integrated DTC video-led omnichannel campaign. The novel approach to omnichannel disease education for healthcare professionals that UCB and Avalere Health launched in 2022 expanded globally in both its content offering and reach in 2023 to HCPs in Canada, Australia, and Japan.

Avalere Health continued its years-long partnership with the Novo Nordisk NovoCare patient education and services program. Working with Sarepta Therapeutics, the agency helped bring their client’s commitment to excellence and innovation in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) through the disease education site, Duchenne.com, while SareptAssist, the company’s patient support program, facilitated new patient starts. 

Avalere Health also won new client assignments, including developing disease state education for HCPs that illuminates little-known aspects of post-traumatic stress disorder with Otsuka. Insulet selected Avalere as the HCP agency of record for its Omnipod tubeless insulin delivery system. Additional wins came from Siemens, Axogen, Gore, and 3M Provena.

Avalere Health Marketing is designed to address the central challenge of our era: driving growth for healthcare brands in the face of unprecedented, accelerated and seemingly unpredictable change,” agency leaders say,  observing that healthcare brands that anticipate, sense, respond to, and create change at pace are the brands that survive and thrive, which they refer to as “Living Brands.” This phrase serves as shorthand and a “pervasive ethos” for how the agency thinks, collaborates, engages clients, and acts.

Avalere Health combines experts from at least 12 different disciplines into six main capabilities. These include insight generation; brand planning and strategy; creative and content strategy; engagement, activation, and performance measurement; media and analytics; and data and technology.

Future plans

Avalere Health is focused on generating sustainable growth for its clients and in turn the agency itself, according to the leadership team. The agency also plans to increase its already significant investment and development of artificial intelligence and tech-enabled services. According to leaders, the agency will be placing even greater emphasis on reaching and engaging those who are underserved, isolated, marginalized, or overlooked. 

Avalere Health will continue to connect and combine data, insight, and expertise from its industry-leading capabilities in consulting, medical affairs, and policy/access/value/evidence to better address client needs and maximize the impact of clients’ innovations.

Philanthropy/citizenship

According to leaders, Avalere Health remains committed to uniting its teams around a shared vision of better health. In line with its commitment to DEI initiatives, the agency participated in the Medical Advertising Hall of Fame 2023 social media challenge, with the goal to increase recruitment of diverse candidates at all levels within health care.

Key philanthropic initiatives in 2023 included continued support of Doctors without Borders; collaborating with Anxiety & Depression Association of America; TreePhilly/Fairmount Park Conservancy; and a virtual fundraiser for Cradles to Crayons, whose mission is to provide essential winter gear for children in need.
